Solid wood floors, especially in older homes which have already settled, may squeak in different seasons as the wood expands and contracts with warmth & humidity or cold and dry air. You may also notice certain area, knots and grains, that seem to raise or lower in different seasons. If it makes you feel better, hire a home inspector to come take a look. They can look under your house and test its stability etc. For anywhere from $100-$300, they will give you a full report on the condition of your house and tell you what should be fixed and what not to worry about. Were it me, I would wait until next summer and see if the squeaking goes away or at least diminishes. We have a brand new construction with hard wood floors and we experience some changes with the seasons as well. As long as there is not major warping, the floor seems fairly level and there are no sunken areas or areas that seem to be higher than others, you should be OK. Squeaky floor boards give a house character!

No need to worry, my house was finished when i was 2, so it is almost 20 yrs old. The hardwood floors started squeaking, and all it took was someone to stand in the spots where it squeaks as another person goes down in the basement and "re-stabilizes" the flooring between the joists.. here is a website where i found out how to do mine.. http://www.hometips.com/home_probsolver/hps07/04_hardwood/hps_hardwood02.html

take up the carpet if you have it, and put flour down and brush it into the joints.....that will stop the squeek. hope this helps

Wood floors squeak, just what they do after a while. But unless the squeaking bothers you, you don't need to do anything to them. The first 'fix' that is easy to try is to use "graphite", dry powdered graphite, not eh wet stuff. Brush it onto the floor around the area where the squeaks are coming from. Rub with toweling. Step on the boards to 'activate the squeaks and get the graphite in there. This MIGHT work for you. If the noise still doesn't quit and you must have them gone look on this website for more cures but be prepared that many gt really severe:-) http://www.naturalhandyman.com/iip/inffloor/infsqe.html

I've read that you should never use water on hardwood, but have been told that unless you do wash them regularly, they'll shrink & maybe squeak. I don't know which is true.
