  • Because an elevator is such a cramped space. Of course, people don't wanna hear every breath you take.
  • Whenever anyone goes against the social norms, people try to avoid noticing them as much as possible. It is rude to 'look' at people who aren't normal, hence avoiding eye contact, and no one likes to be confined with someone they feel uncomfortable with, hence the fidgeting. Elevators force people to be closer than they would freely choose, and the polite thing to do in that case is to ignore those around you as much as possible, unless they are friends. I have been on elevators at conventions where all attendees are considered to be friends, and therefore the experience is more party-like.

  • Because their "personal space" is being invaded and it makes them uncomfortable.
  • I feel uncomfortable with strangers in my bubble. I dont like being crammed in a tight space with a bunch a people I dont know.

  • personally speaking i hate elevators. they make me really nervous and uncomfortable this is because i am crammed in a small space with people i don´t know and my life is hanging on some rickety thread.
