For for the British TV programme, see The Sketch Show. Sketch comedy consists of a series of short comedy scenes, or 'sketches', commonly between one and ten minutes long. • It's really quite simple: there is NO difference, technically. They are synonyms. You can use one or the other and be correct. They are defined exactly the same. However, people who actually DO sketch comedy will bristle if you call it a skit. A skit reminds us of the stuff performed by amateurs at church, the Boy Scouts or in talent shows at summer camp. So perhaps it is just an attempt to separate ourselves from the campy, stupid stuff that kids do, and create an air of professionalism around what we do. Here's my definition of a "sketch": A "sketch" is more like a sitcom that only takes 5 minutes to perform. There are great characters with strong points of view, a situation that demands resolution, a heightened response, and a resolution of some sort. It's complete and self-contained.
