  • Jesus (Christ)mas, and the mas part is from mass meaning gathering, so it is a gathering in the name of Christ.
  • It is the idea of Christmas, not the date. Jesus was born in late May.
  • That's what allowed Christianity to spread so easily into Pagan communities, by "latching on" to existing Pagan celbrations and adapting them into Christian celebrations. It was much easier for people to adopt Christianity if it was already familiar to them. Christmas is celebrated when it is, and with many of the symbols and traditions it has, because it evolved out of the Winter Solstice pagan celebrations with its existing symols and rituals. Similarly, Easter grew out of the fertility celbrations tied to the Spring Eqinox (hence the rabbits and baby chickens associated with Easter).
  • A lot of the bible is derived from stories of previous times. The date reflects other holidays such as the romans etc.
  • Please look at my answer to a question about a similar issue: http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/1909497 It was not *only* a roman festival. There used to be winter festivals everywhere in the world. The early Church leader knew the deep implantation of this festival, which bases on a natural event. They were not able to make it disappear and preferred to give it a Christian value. However, some of the pre Christian customs have survived. Here a list of winter festivals: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_festivals
  • Recently, I have began to wonder if my Lord and Saviour has anything to do or even desires anything to do with such as festival as Christmas. It is probably the most hypocritical time of the year, and disgraces Christ probably more than it honors Him. Thank you and may God bless you. :) -In Jesus Christ's Name.
