To my knowledge, there is no XP-related software that could cause that. Any such patch would affect high-end (usually gaming) rigs that come from the dealer already OC'd so I severely doubt any such software would ever exist. It is possible that your BIOS (the firmware) got twittered, though that is also highly unlikely. My guess is that there is something else going on in the hardware end of things. Maybe a connection got a speck of dust, or maybe your heatsink isn't on right (though that usually causes an automatic shutdown), or maybe your voltages are incorrect. One other issue I have run into is a bad DIMM. Maybe it's a coincidence that you redid your system at the same time you borked a DIMM.

There are a large number of viruses on the net which can do that. Try to reinstall Windows. There is another possibility. When I was downloading a file from the net, there was a flicker in the electric power. When I restarted the PC, it hanged. I ran recovery and it worked again. I worked with mini-computers and mainframe computers. My experience is that the file systems in PCs are not so reliable, and are subject to corruption due to many causes. I found that even the chipsets on the motherboards of PCs are not that reliable. Download Dynebolic Linux live CD's iso file. Try whether the hardware is working normally. http://www.dynebolic.org/ http://www.dynebolic.org/index.php?show=available http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Operating-Systems/Linux-Distributions/Dynebolic-GNU-Linux-1784.shtml
