  • Police ranks vary from department to department. A typical progression is: Patrolman Corporal Senior Corporal Sergeant Senior Sergeant In some departments, patrolmen who want to get out of the field can advance to Detective. From there, it goes to Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief. Chief of Police is a political appointment; a Chief can be hired by the City Manager (if the city uses a Manager/Council form of government) from outside of the department if they decide it's needed.
