  • The airline we dealt with (American) requested only the name, address and phone number of the funeral home and the name of the deceased.
  • I have had a friend try for a reduced fare in this way, but the airline wanted a copy of the death certificate.
  • Most airlines will give you the same price as if you had booked in advance. Sometimes you have to prove it to them by giving the name and funeral home, but not always. Sometimes you can get the same rate if you are rushing home to see someone before they die or if they are seriously ill. You never know unless you ask.
  • Several airlines want a copy of the obituary and the name of the funeral home when booking the bereavement fare. You should take note however, that you can sometimes get a much cheaper fare by booking with priceline.com or travelocity.com than the bereavement fare. I was surprised that a bereavement fare was so high the one time I checked into it. As for other qualifications, you should be an immediate family member.
