I wouldnt say doomed, but the chances of you being like the other 10% is unlikely.

It's your choice to use drugs and alcohol. Your family's actions may pressure you, but it is ultimately your decision. The future is yours to wield, make of it what you want. Mental disorders are a different matter. If you are worried, get yourself diagnosed.

no you are not. you may have a genetic predisposition which makes you more susecptible to addiction...but that does not mean that you dont have the power to make a choice.

i wouldn't say doomed but i'd take it a sign that you need to be more careful than most about what you do

No. My father was an alcoholic, and I grew up seeing him and my mother (she drank a lot, but wasn't an alcoholic - when my dad struggled to become sober, she gave up drinking with no problem) drinking every day and spending every moment they could at the VFW drinking. I am not an alcoholic. I drink on occasion, but probably no more than 6 or 7 drinks in a year. And I only drink when I choose to.

No, if you truly don't want to be like the others in your family and you put your mind to it, you can do anything you want to are don't want. Just have faith and follow the right path and you will do just fine! Hope everything works out for you!!

Not necessarily. I am 10 yrs clean from all street drugs but you have to understand addiction to keep away from it. It will manifest in many different ways...gambling, TV, reading, or anything else that makes you feel good. YOu may absolutely have an addictive personality from the genetics but the choice to use is yours & yours alone. Once you use & you have that addictive personality, the drugs will alter your brain & you no longer have a choice because the drugs make the choices for you. If you decide not to pick up drugs or alcohol, you are OK. But that doesn't mean you are doomed. My family has a history or alcohol & drug abuse too, but many of my siblings can control their drinking. It just doesn't take over. I was not that lucky. The 1st day I used was the first day of my demise. Make good choices & make sure you stay in control. Good luck!!!

Addiction can be avoided about 100%. Be careful, be disciplined, and I suggest not drinking at all, and definitely not trying drugs of ANY kind. Be careful with medications as well. Addiction is partly physical and some people's bodies are more prone to it than others. Don't give it a chance to even start. Mental disorders are a little harder, but keeping close tabs on yourself and making it to a doctor if something seems to be changing or you're having trouble, will help a lot. If you do begin to develop a mental condition, usually it's partly physical and will need medication, and usually it's partly mental and will need counseling and awareness of the problem to fight it. It depends on what it is - and only a doctor can help you figure that out. Mostly self-awareness and a healthy lifestyle is the key to mental health.
