  • There are several online stores that specialize in conservative and demure prom dresses. One of these, LDSprom.com (Latter Day Saints) has some beautiful dresses. In the aftermath of the red carpet season of Hollywood award shows, and as boutiques and department stores gear up for a parade of teenagers looking for prom dresses to match, designers from across the country are offering teenagers less revealing alternatives in prom wear. They are catering to teenagers who are coming of age in conservative families and who want to wear their values, quite literally, on their sleeves. Most mainstream retailers have been slower to pick up on the trend, but some stores that do big prom business, like Nicole Miller, have taken notice with their own more conservative dresses. Holly Beck began her online label called DresZing in 2001 to give teenagers a variety of fashionable, conservative options. A Mormon herself, Beck says her clientele includes Muslims and Orthodox Jews whose religion dictates that they dress modestly. Beck designs her dresses for girls with the idea that modesty should not have to come at the price of fashion. Her clients’ dresses may have sleeves and a higher neckline, but she tries to make them with trendy fabrics and styles. Beck follows the trends by reading fashion magazines and scrutinizing Oscar gowns. One of Beck’s most popular dresses is “The Alicia,” which has black velvet sleeves, a silver satin bodice and a velvet-trimmed hemline. Salespeople at Nicole Miller offer colorful shawls for girls who want to cover their shoulders or decolletage. And while backless dresses may be found in the store, less revealing choices are available for any client’s style and body shape, said Irena Budimova, a saleswoman at the designer’s Madison Avenue store. The number of Web sites offering modest prom wear is ballooning. One such venture, called modestbydesign.com, reports that it has seen its business quadruple since it began five years ago. The owner, Eddie Gist, says he just opened a store in Murray, Utah, to complement his Web business. One site called modestprom.com offers quick fixes to make a revealing dress more conservative. For dresses exposing too much of the bust area, the Web site suggests trimming a couple of inches off the hem and using the extra fabric to revamp the neckline. Another alternative for strapless dresses is a cap-sleeve shrug that can be made to cover the shoulders for under $10. Many teenagers now forgo Seventeen and Cosmopolitan magazines to search for modest fashions online at jenmagazine.com. Jennifer Loch launched the Web site in 2003 to help girls understand that they don’t have to show skin to be cool. Within months of starting the site, Loch was flooded with e-mails from appreciative girls who felt they could now look fashionable without compromising their values.
