The court may hear the child or his/her advocate and make its decision with the child's preferences in mind, but once an order is entered, it has to be either followed or parties have to petition the court again for a change of custody order. Of course, if the child is emotionally or physically endangered law enforcement can become involved and the custody order can be superceded at least temporarily.
