Different species cannot mate. Their genes aren't the same so the sperm and ovum can't create a foetus that will develop. Sometimes, however, if two species that are almost exactly the same (like... donkies and zebras or lions and tigers), the two species can mate successfully(zeedonks and ligers!), but the offspring is sterile, so cannot then reproduce with either of its' parents or even another cross-breed like itself.
