  • If I remember the numbers correctly, a piece of typeset paper in standard 12 pt courier is 66 lines by 80 columns, which is 5280 characters. If a word is defined as five letters and a space, then 5280 divided by six is 880 words on one page. But, that is just to the best of my memory, so the numbers used in the calculation could be off, plus, it has nothing to do with the modern world of variable fonts, point sizes, line heights, kerning, etc. EDIT: According to this- http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=608972 it's 250 words per page for a novel, but a novel has small pages, not 8.5 x 11.
  • I have three essays I checked and it averages about 200 words per page, if that helps.
  • 726 words, using Magenta's (earlier commentor) formula. Using Times New Roman, 12pt font, 1.5 spacing on Open Office, which I imagine is pretty balanced for all school work related numbers. 93 letters across by 49 down (I used the letter a and word count) and then divide it by 6 for the average word length (also provided by magenta).
