My brother William goes by Billy. I don't know where it comes from... he's named after his grandfather... who used to be known as Billy Bud. I don't know how "Lawrence" became "Bud" either, come to think of it...

Both Bill and Will are short forms of William. It may be that Will was the original form, and then Bill came about by rhyming. The same with Robert-Rob/Bob.
