  • You might 'break' the Multimeter, when it is turned to 'Ω', because it is trying to measure RESISTANCE to electricity, not electricity (from voltage source) itself. Connecting it to a 12V battery while it is turned to 'Ω' would almost certainly break it permanently.
  • You're describing a setting for measuring resistance -- the horseshoe is a Greek omega, the symbol for Ohms. Multimeters do this by applying their OWN voltage to the leads. So if you hook it up to a voltage source in a resistance-measurement mode, you're connecting two power supplies to each other -- one of them could blow.
