You can only purchase stocks immediately when the market is open. You can place orders when the market is closed and it will be processed when the market opens in the morning.

One can trade premarket starting at 8 am and after market until 8 pm. Check with your broker for details. Usually only "limit" orders are trading. And it is risky.
