Good question. This is quite common. A little bleach in the drains every few days (5 to 7 days) will rid you of those pesky little guys and keep them away. Clean the drain screen/stopper in bleach too.

diluted Viniger and water, in little bowls. It is a little stinking for a hour or so, but it will attract them and kill them.

Will fixing insect screens help? My wife and I are usually very concerned about the intrusion of mosquitoes. When we fixed the insect screen at the convenient places in our house, our problem is solved. I hope you would consider this option. Sorry about your problem.

bleach in the drains definately works. Remember to do it every day, but also remember to remove fruit and food off the counter or anywhere else in the house, clean up all crumbs and sticky spills that might be on the floors. summer and early fall are the hardest times to control fruit flies because of all the fresh produce.

Stretch some plastic wrap over a glass with some cider vinegar in it and secure it with a rubber band. Poke a few small holes in it (use a freshly extinguished match to make a clean hole). The sweet smelling cider is an excellent attractor (better than most things in your kitchen, provided it's somewhat clean), and the holes let flies in but make it difficult to fly out. After a few days your problems should be gone.
