  • That is just the way it works in music. Have you learned the circle of fifths?
  • This is weird, but there just isn't an F flat or D sharp. I have now idea if it's something natural to do with the sound, or just the way that the pitches were recorded, but it's definitely confusing, kind of like the relationship between the g and b string on a guitar.
  • If you look at a piano, you can see that there is no key just for E sharp or F flat. E sharp would just be F, and F flat would just be E. That's just how it works.
  • It's the shortest interval of tones in Western music. The E and F are a break in the circle of fifths that occurs in the tuning system. If you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semitones and go down to the subheading "Meantone temperament" it will explain it in cents and all that.
  • you could say that E to E# is a half step.. but E# and F are the same note... so yeah.
