  • You need to combine approaches with this. The puppy chews for a lot of different reasons, but usually from teething. Most of the time a dog will outgrow chewing as s/he finishes getting his/her adult teeth -- between six and eight months. First, provide the pup with a lot of chew toys. In my own experience, hard rubber or rope is best -- they *can* destroythem, but it takes time and will not make them sick. Stay ways from rawhide. Then, if you catch him/her chewing something else, firmly tell them no and give them a chew toy instead. As well, chili oil is one excellent repellent. Don't lay it on thick -- a very small amount will repel dogs (and cats) just because of the scent -- the taste is really strong, too, and they hate it, but too much can burn their tongues. Hope this helps.
  • The best thing you can do for this is providing LOTS and LOTS of chew toys for the puppy as well as closely supervising him while he is running about. Get a baby gate and always keep him in the same room with you, the more you can distract him when he looks like he's gonna start chewing, the better your chances of stopping this behavior before it becomes more than just a phase. The next thing you can do is go to the pet store and buy some bitter apple spray. There are plenty of commercial products in which this is the main ingredient. This is non-toxic for puppy and won't ruin your floors or furniture. You can also go to the grocery and buy some Alum powder...dogs HATE this taste. When you are close and catch him chewing put a bit of this in his mouth/on said object and he won't forget that taste (it's completely non-toxic to him as well). Don't worry, with time and supervision this is just a phase...it'll go away :)
  • Time, chew toys and training.
  • Sprays don't work. You must provide him with chew toys, and praise him when he chews them. Tell him sharply, and loudly, and even clap your hands - NO! when he goes to chew something else. Training is the only thing that will help.
