  • It lost its religious meaning long before I was born and probably everyone else.
  • I think it did there for a long while, but with less money to go around, people have enjoyed just spending more time with family members and thanking the good lord for what they do have insted of looking at what they dont have.
  • i think that ever year the emphasis moves more away from religion, with bigger ad campaigns, longer shopping periods etc. But i still believe that people do know the true meaning of xmas, no matter how hard capatalism trys. And that is what actually matters.
  • I hate to break this to everyone, but no where in the scriptures is anyone commanded to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It's very clear we are to commemorate his sacrificial death. Lights, decorated trees, senseless shopping and Santa Claus are so 180 degrees from Jesus, it's not funny.
  • sadly, yes. I'm not saying we should forget presents and get all religious, but it would be nice if everything wasn't so materialistic and we could go back to singing carols and enjoy nativity scenes.
  • Almost every one I know doesn't have a religious celebration or recognition of this day. The media and the retailers have turned Christmas into the day of getting. And so many parents get way to much for their children. It is all the children associate Christmas with along with that they don't have to go to school.
  • For too many people, yes. All these companies trying to make money, nothing religous about that. And I know many non-Christians who celebrate.
  • Pretty much. I don't feel any sympathy for the "oh noes happy holidays is a war on christmas" people. You can't chew out the store clerk for not saying merry christmas when she hands back your credit card after a 300 dollar purchase and then tell her Jesus Christ is the meaning of the holiday.
  • To me it's still about Jesus' birthday but you're right
  • I feel that it has become more and more commercial over the years. However, I still feel and believe it is the celebration of Jesus' Birthday. It is so sad that it become more and more commercial and the giving of presents are now more important then of giving of Jesus' love and in knowing that he was born for a reason. Let us not forget the celebration of Christmas, to celebrate Christ's birth and give of his love to each and everyone of us !
  • Not for everyone, but I wish there was more focus on Jesus, as he was and is the greatest gift of all! If you think paying off your credit cards is hard, try sin and death!
  • Not for me. I love it for the fact that it celebrates the birth of my Saviour. I look forward to it each year. I love thinking of ways to spread the news of Salvation. I thrill to the thought of Christmas Day when I can sing my heart out in Church and celebrate with my two families- spiritual and birth.
  • Not for everyone but for a very large percentage of the population .
  • Retailers have done their best to make a buck and I guess that's their job and it keeps plenty of people employed. That's the pragmatic side of Christmas. The mystical beauty of Christmas I hope will be maintained forever. The celebration of the birth of this passionate human being whose ideas were centuries ahead of his time. He encouraged us to live with compassion and do unto others as we would have them do unto us. He was as strong as he was gentle.
  • I think that Christmas loses its religious value with every new generation. Most of the children in America today are so obsessed with what they're going to get on Christmas day that they lose all interest in thinking about Jesus. A long time ago, Jesus was the only thing people really thought about on Christmas. Eventually we're going to forget the true meaning of Christmas.
  • I do not know if it has completely lost it, but it is losing it. I celebrate the Christmas holiday in rememberence of Christ's birth, but I do not call it "Jesus' birthday" because I doubt that the date of His birth was in December, but rather, probably in Spring or sometime like that. Thank you and may God bless you. :) -In Jesus' Name.
  • I sadly believe that you are right. I think that people have lost the true meaning of the season. That meaning is Jesus. It is How God loves us so much, he gave us his only son to save us. Some embraced him. Most Ridiculed him. They hated him so much, that they put him to death on the cross, the cross being him shown as a common criminal. It was a death he freely accepted, because he knew it would take away our sins. I keep the aspect of the Lord's birth alive in my heart every day. I wish to be a Christian till my flesh gives way and I join The father in heaven. Then I will be truly happy, in Paradise. I go to church every Sunday and try to love others as God loves us. Last Christmas, after Christmas mass, I see a small boy in a corner. He looks lonely so I go up to him. I ask him what he thought of the mass. He says it was alright. I say that we now know the message of Christmas, Jesus. He then says, Who's Jesus? It felt like my heart broke into pieces. This boy was 7 and didn't know who Jesus is. I ask him who he thinks of when he thinks of Christmas. He answers Santa Claus. He thought of Santa over The Son of God. I am not saying that there should be no presents. I just think that people should think of Jesus than Presents.
