No, "pope" is from the Greek "pappas" meaning "father", which was a commonly used way to address priests and bishops. It is still used in that sense in most parts of the Orthodox Church, but in the 4th and 5th centuries AD its use in the western Church became restricted to the Bishop of Rome, the office now called the Papacy.

Jesus to Peter: "You are 'Rock,' and on this rock I will build My Church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Suprised no one else mentions this quote, because it is the main justification for a pope, if only to try to dismiss it. http://www.catholic-pages.com/pope/peter.asp

Some good answers above, but the Revelation quote "reveals,' no pun meant, total ignorance about that Book. It was about the murder or Christians by the Roman Emperor and his cohorts, and about the Final Victory of Christ which the martyrs, those dying for their Faith and those still suffering for it, AT THAT TIME, and for all believers since. It uses the language of Daniel and other Old Testament imagery and CODE language to keep Caesar's "Homeland Security" folks from getting hold of the Christian's letters, and books, later to become the Bible.

Revelation DOES NOT refer to the papacy, the Church of Rome, and that kind of teaching feeds into the Devil's attack on the Church as the ignorant continue to lie, and make up stories, or dwell on the sins or other Churches/denominations today, or on the past while Satan laughs all the way to his Bank of Hell as "Christians" hate in the Name of Jesus, and thus show that they are NOT followers of Christ by IGNORING THE REAL SATAN and accuse others of being 'THE BEAST OF BABYLON" and actually do the BEAST'S WORK for him instead, thinking they are doing Jesus a favor and being 'Bible-believing" Christians.

    No. But what about this description from Revelation;
(Revelation 18:11-17) “Also, the traveling merchants of the earth are weeping and mourning over her, because there is no one to buy their full stock anymore, 12 a full stock of gold and silver and precious stone and pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet; and everything in scented wood and every sort of ivory object and every sort of object out of most precious wood and of copper and of iron and of marble; 13 also cinnamon and Indian spice and incense and perfumed oil and frankincense and wine and olive oil and fine flour and wheat and cattle and sheep, and horses and coaches and slaves and human souls. 14 Yes, the fine fruit that your soul desired has departed from you, and all the dainty things and the gorgeous things have perished from you, and never again will people find them. 15 “The traveling merchants of these things, who became rich from her, will stand at a distance because of [their] fear of her torment and will weep and mourn, 16 saying, ‘Too bad, too bad—the great city, clothed with fine linen and purple and scarlet, and richly adorned with gold ornament and precious stone and pearl, 17 because in one hour such great riches have been devastated!’ “And every ship captain and every man that voyages anywhere, and sailors and all those who make a living by the sea, stood at a distance

Compare what you see on the T.V. with this description.

No. The papacy is a man-made false doctrine of the great babilonian whore.

    My 2 cents.

Short answer, Peter was named by Jesus earthly head of the Church, whose ACTUAL HEAD and SHEPHERD (PASTOR) and the Popes continue that role, the main altar in St. Peter's Basilica was built over his tomb which was always presumed to be there since Constantine legalized Christianity and built the first Church, the body prsumed to be St. Peter's was found in the 1968 or so, one may go down to the "scavi" excavations today.

    Not really.

But the role of Pope is clearly created by Jesus in the Bible. See John 21:15-17 and Matthew 16:17-19.

Many "Christian" words are not found in the Bible:
    • Adventist
    • Anglican
    • Beatitude
    • Catholic
    • Christmas
    • Easter
    • Congregational
    • Creed
    • Epiphany
    • Eucharist
    • Hell
    • Incarnation
    • Lutheran
    • Martyr
    • Mennonite
    • Methodist
    • Orthodox
    • Protestant
    • Pentateuch
    • Purgatory
    • Quakers
    • Sacrament
    • Sunday
    • Testament

This does not mean that these words have no meaning.

    With love in Christ.

    Yes

"You have heard that Antichrist cometh" (1 John 2:18); "This is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he cometh" (1 John 4:3). Though the Apostle speaks of several Antichrists, he distinguishes between the many and the one principal agent: "Antichrist cometh, even now there are become many Antichrists" (1 John 2:18). Again, the writer outlines the character and work of Antichrist: "They went out from us, but they were not of us" (1 John 2;19); "Who is a liar, but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is Antichrist, who denies the Father, and the Son" (1 John 2:22); "And every spirit that dissolveth Jesus, is not of God; and this is Antichrist" (1 John 4:3); "For many seducers are gone out into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh: this is a seducer and an Antichrist" (2 John 7). Also the time, the Apostle places the coming of Antichrist at "the last hour" (1 John 2:18); again he maintains that "he is now already in the world" (1 John 4:3).

    Many times.

    AntiChrist = pope
