Scale. A Gulf is just a giant bay.
-
A bay is larger than a cove, smaller than a gulf, but all are essentially bodies of water partially enclosed by land.

I have never thought about it. Same difference as a city and a town I guess. Size. It is a bay unless it covers several hundred thousand square miles then it's a gulf, but I don't know how big a bay can be.

a bay is part of a sea indenting a shoreline. while a gulf is an area of the ocean that penetrates towards the land. it is generally larger and more deeply indented than a bay. and the bay is smaller and less surrounded by land. it's mouth is wider than that of a gulf.
