If you never saved the document while opened with word pad, or you still have the origonal, you need not worry about the 'symbols'. The symbols are just word pad's attempt at translating the code from microsoft works. If, for some reason, the document will only open with word pad, (even though you have works installed), you simply need to... 1. Right-click the document and select 'open with', and 'choose program'. 2. Find your microsoft works program form the list (you may need to browse for it if it's not listed...in which case it's probably located in 'C:program filesmicrosoft works'. 3. Make sure 'always use the selected program...' is checked, and select 'OK'. Again, if you didn't 'save' the file while opened with word pad, the document is still it's origonal self and awaits to be opened by a compatable program like microsoft works.

If you have Microsoft Office you can download a converter from http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/downloads.mspx. If you don't have Office there are various free converters available. There is one here, although I haven't used it and can't guarantee it, http://tinyurl.com/yrg6b8
