I slept on a futon for many years before purchasing a bed. In small Japanese homes, a bed is not practical. The futon will give your back very good support if you sleep on your back a lot, however, if you sleep on your sides, it might be hard on your shoulders unless you have a good hard pillow to support your head. The convenient thing about futons are that they can be put away in the closet and you have a bigger space for living quarters during the day. Sort of a necessity in small Japanese "rabbit hutch" homes.

Not sure how comfortable it is, but I can't help but picturing the Seinfeld episode with the Japanese guys sleeping in Kramers chest of drawers:)
