  • No, militant describes a type of person rather than one's profession. In the U.S. anyway, a generic term for someone the military, regardless of the branch is "serviceman" or "servicewoman", in that they are a member of the Armed Services. When one is actively engaged in combat, 'militant' could apply, but the accepted term in that case is 'combatant'. To me, militant implies that one advocates aggressive pursuit of a cause to the point of violence. It is a misconception for those who think that just because one is in the military that they are pro-war. Trust me, many career military people are very much into conflict prevention as they know what war actually means.
