  • In most cases, yes. If your employer doesn't match 401(k) contributions, then the only advantages to the plan are systematic savings and tax deferral. Tax-free savings (such as in the Roth IRA) are a higher savings priority than tax deferral. However, if you max out your Roth contribution, you may then wish to consider contributing to the 401(k).
