I have heard them described as biting on a cats tail and holding it while it is screaming. Up close, I found the sound to be quite overwhelming.
-
I kinda like them...but I am of Scottish heritage and grew up listening to them.
-
I love them.
-
When played well there are brilliant, but when played badly they hurt!
-
If anyone has ever seen the episode of Friends where Ross tries to learn how to play them (esp the scene at the end of the episode) then the answer is FUNNY :)
-
MY GOD! They are the single funniest instrument ever invented!! (Apart from the piccollo...what a ridiculous instrument!!!:P ) p.s apologies to any bagpipe/ picollo players out there. ESPECIALLY if you play both....
-
Worse than irritating positively painful!
-
I think they're fun :)
-
I Love the sound of bagpipes. So fun is my answer.
-
They are irritating by themselves. And, beyond irritating if they are in a parade.
-
When played properly, they can actually be kind of cool.
-
I love them. And when played well, they can sells chills up my spine.
-
I like the sound of bagpipes.
-
I think bagpipes can be nice sounding. I used to work in an office next door to the fireman's union building and every month their bagpipe and drum corp would practice in the parking lot... it was very cool to hear.
-
Despite the quote on my About Me page, I actually think that bagpipes have the capability to sound very good.
-
I enjoy listening to Bagpipes. I have a friend who plays them.
-
fun. i love bagpipes. i don't think i'm allowed to be scottish and not like bagpipes. i have a friend who plays them and they sound really good played well.
-
I don't know- I used to like them- and then for some random reason they were played at orientation and obviously the dude only knew one tune and it's like the most popular bagppipe tunes. So by the time the procession was over I checked bagpipes off my list of things I really get annoyed by. Other wise they are a very cool instrument...
-
Love them!! My ring tone is the Scottish National Anthem by the Dropkick Murphies!!
-
Fun if I could play one, and fun to listen to!
-
Mostly annoying. If they're part of a combo or band, OK.
-
I once went to the Scottish Games in Sonoma County in California. The Royal Baggers were there along with many others from all across the contry. They all played Amazing Grace at the same time. It was Awesome. On the other hand when my cousin was learning how to play it drove me up the wall.
-
they are soooo totally awsome!!
-
Bagpipes are AWESOME! Okay fine....Yes, it does get annoying after a while with their piercing sound but overall, their pretty cool!
-
I love em :)
-
Bagpipes are cool and I actually know a person who plays them very well.
-
I love them, and i can play them aswell, you need alot of puff for it but seeing as i spend all my time talking i can do it ok lol
-
YOu mean that obnoxious instrument played by Scotsmen? I love them. Tried learning once. Wish hubby would learn. Mournful but beautiful at the same time.
-
Fun and very unique. I've never heard one instrument that can sound so sad or so happy depending on the tune.
-
there awesome
-
They're the best! I love them, such a wide range of emotions acheivable.
-
I think they're great.
-
I love them! They're awesome! I so wish I could play them. They are so beautiful.
-
Sorta sounds like someone is choking a chicken.
-
Fun fur sure.
-
Bagpipes are fun and I happen to know someone who is very good at playing it.
-
Definitely depends on the quality of what's being played! Bad players give bagpipes a band name, I think. And most people will never hear a really good player. But when they're played well, they're really cool.
-
Good bagpipes are the music of the gods, bad bagpipe musicians are the tools of Satan
-
VERY IRRITATING they should be band along with pan pipes!!
-
They'rrre grreat, laddie!
-
I find them fun. I wish I could learn to play.
-
When played well, they're awesome. When played badly, they're painful...
-
I love them too...find it fascinating how people can get good at an instrument like that, love the sound.
-
If they are played well.. they sound really cool. if not then pretty damn annoying.
-
My heritage is Scotch-Irish, and I adore Celtic music. But I absolutely can't stand the bagpipes!
-
Hate em when they're played indoors... Indoors they are far too loud... I've been to more than one indoor function that had a bagpipe player, and when the pipes start playing everyone cringes and can't wait for it to be over. Here's a quote for you - "The shrill and penetrating notes worked well in the roar and din of battle and pipes could be heard at distances up to 10 miles." http://www.visitdunkeld.com/bagpipe-history.htm So, outdoors, yeah, they're cool... but indoors, they can be shrill, almost deafening, and can be almost like fingernails on a blackboard in their effect...
-
im scottish heritage.(woo) but if not played right or indoors. it can be a pain. amazing grace played with bagpipes makes a good funeral song. not talking about death, it has a unique sound. i find it fun.
-
I like bagpipes, they are the scottish folk music signature, for what would scotland's music be without bagpipes? I heard a great performance with bagpipes last december in December Nights at Balboa Park, where there were performances of music from all over the world performed by natives(each country made a performance)
-
Depends on if the person with them really knows how to play them well.
-
I love them!
-
I love to hear them - at the right time and in the right place. They have such a powerful sound, and really make an impact when playing at a funeral/wedding/party/parade etc. It is not really that pleasant to hear them practicing the same piece over and over out of tune. They used to practice very close to my home, and it was sometimes too much.
-
Fun - I might take it up later in life.
-
Looks like I'm in the minority here. I can't stand bag pipes. If I saw someone walking down the road with some I would RUN the other way. That is how bad I hate them. Sorry if I offended anyone.
-
they look like a bag of fun really.
-
I love listening to them played. Sometimes they can make you laugh too.
-
I love the sound of bagpipes! I wouldn't want to learn how to play them or anything like that, I just love to hear the sound of them.
-
Depends on the person playing them. Interesting fact, more people play the bagpipes now then at any point in history.
-
This performance by Cristina Pato can bring the tears right out!
-
Fun. But I wanna know who did all the research to develop a musical instrument that sounds just like someone stuffed a cat under their arm and chewed on its tail. THAT is one brave Scot!
-
Bagpipes make for very interesting music. I have a few bagpipes cds not to mention Celtic/Irish cds that have bpipes playing in the background..very nice! :)
-
they are the best !!!!! go albannach
-
its only irritating when other people play them
-
Neither; I love the sound of them. There was a bagpiper busking where I live last year, and the people in the shops around got a petition up to have him banned because they said he was too loud! And they suceeded!
-
It depends on the situation. At a wedding or something I like them, but at other times they can be very irritating.
-
Scenario a# My next door neighbour rehearses his bagpipeing whilst I am attempting to study for major exams = not so fun. Scenario b# I'm at some sick festival in the city watching the awesome bagpipes and kilts a'flappin' = fun :D Fun fact for you: There is not just one type of bagpipe, there are many according to a country's regions and culture. The first developings of what would become the bagpipe began in ancient egypt. Ah my, fascinating stuff! :)
-
A beautiful instrument, but with a long history. Originally called the "bloodpipes", due to the fact that they were made from (partially) entrails.
-
even though I have Irish in me...I don't like the sound of them. It's irratating sometimes. Sounds off key or something!
-
I like them, but unfortunately most people I know don't.
