  • Probably because in most other languages it is based on Latin.
  • Possibly because it is the first "formed" sound that most babies make. When a baby learns to recognise its mother, the recognition noise it makes is likely to be "ma... ma...". The mother responds to it, and soma variant on mama becomes the accepted word for mother.
