My first year out I shot a 16pt buck. Scored 184 B&C. Second place youth, MN. That was 13 years ago and since then there have been a lot of spikes, forks, 6, 8, and even one nine pointer that I shot at about 600 yards. But, I am no trophy hunter. I just want venison on the table, and that fat doe looks pretty tasty.

My husband used to hunt deer when we lived in CA. We haven't taken the time to get licensed here in New York yet. But he easily got one small, but legal buck each year. I don't think anything had more than 4-6 points. We weren't allowed to hunt spikes. We just looked for young big bucks for our table. We didn't buy a lot of meat that we didn't hunt or raise. And it was some of the best meat if you cleaned it well and prepared it nicely. I was a bear about getting all the silver off and none of it in my hamburger grind. We'd make sweet and sour braised ribs with the ribs and even the leg bones. Our deer got well-used:-) Deer were everywhere and plentiful on our property in central CA. Sometimes there would be herds of 15-30. Since we abutted a town with no hunting, all the deer seemed to hide out on our land lol! We really had to fence off our gardens and they would even come into the barn and eat the hay. I loved having them around the house because they were so beautiful but just taking one each year never made a dent in the population.

The biggest deer I ever took was a doe we never weighed but she was a heavy load even after field dressing for a strong man to carry. The most points of any deer I killed had a freak rack with four points on one antler and only one on the other.
