  • And it is not about any particular nation. It is about thanking the Heros of YOUR own nation.
  • Many are praying with you, Widgets! It is Armistice Day in the UK,the end of WW1, and Veteran's Day in the USA. (Reemembrance, spell!) It occurs in the month of November when for the Roman Catholic and High Church Tradition, we remember the dead, a custom which is common in most faith communities worldwide, noted at different times, and is stupidly parodied here by the goofiness of Halloween. All those who go before us are recalled EVERY DAY in the Catholic celebration of Eucharist/Mass with a special emphasis for the dead in this month when leaves fall, trees appear to die and the earth curls up for winter. Meantime, the Christmas commercials and stores are in full swing this weeeknd, jumping ahead for "the holidays" which is a disaster. Why can we not enjoiy and savor each season as it comes and NOT presume that we have to have Christmas a month ahead and then drop it on the day itself, the ancient Tradition for Jews and Christians is to ENJOY and CELEBRATE BIG FEASTS for 8-9 days AFTER THE FACT! Is it any wonder 10-11 year olds are having sex so often now whene Mom and Dad and Wal Mart and JC Penney and Macys etc. are ANTICIPATING CHRISTMAS BY MORE THAN A MONTH, SAME FOR EASTER ETC. Good post from you, hope this reply helps you and others put prayer for those who serve and died in service in perspective. We also toss aside those who are sick, injured, disalbed Veterans and sadly, there are many now from the Gulf War since they are surviving injuries they would have died from in WW1-2, II Korea and 'Nam and even Gulf I.
  • I saw 'remembrance Sunday' and had a vague idea that it was British and had an image of the Queen Mum handing out poppies. Apparently i was close to right. Is it always a SUNDAY? Here in the Huge Nited States of America we have Veterans day in November. It used to be Armistace day 11/11/11. November, 11, 11 AM when WWI 'ended.' Church bells would ring at 11 o'clock. After the war after the war to end all war it got changed to Veterans day. It was still an 11/11/11 type thing till the Chambers of Commerce types convinced the Govt. that we needed 3 day week ends and now Veterans day is the Monday closest to 11/11. We have at least one official , Govt. holiday ( Bank Holiday? a month now.)Mostly, Veterans day is a day of price reduction 'sales' at the stores. I have even seen tasteless, nay, disgusting, ads in the papers with the Marines raising the Iwo Jima flag on top of refrigerators. Smaller towns still hve parades and ring the bells, politicians take the opportunity to make speeches, veterans groups have ceremonies followed bt pic-nics and bar-B-ques. In may we have Memorial day which is, at least, the day to remember the people who died in our various wars, Police actions, and , er, armed conflicts, which seems to be more like Remembrance Day. Recently it seems that folks, especially politicians, are getting the two confused. They seem to skip over Veterans day, as they seem to forget about our living veterans, and concentrate on the folks who are gone and past and can't benifit from any real govt. attention. And there are a lot of ceremonies and attention for the people now serving, who haven't started needing or asking for any benifits or help. Aw, well, that's my complaint. But for sure i have nothing but true gratitude for people we tell," Here, I got a job for you that involves people doing there best to kill you. The pay is bad, the food worse, and the accomadations are the ground you take. When you are done with it, go on about your business, I'd rather no hear from you anymore." I've quoted him B4 but Rudyard Kipling hit it on the nailhead, 'While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind", But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,'
  • On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, WW1 ended. That is why it is Remebrance Day. In Australia, we commemorate it with a minute's silence. I did.
  • They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. (Laurence Binyon)
  • Lest we forget.
  • I'd like to thank them for all their hard work but I'm not sure too many WWI veterans are left any more if there is even just a handful remaining. The world went through a major struggle to thrust itself into our modern age and we still are fighting to fight for human rights and justice in this world. I'm an optimist.
  • thank you all,GREAT SOULS.we are proud of you all.
  • There have been about 15 such questions so far today and I answer the same to all of them... Yes.
  • I could never thank them enough for all they had done. Thank you to all Veterans everywhere!!
  • As I said in my answer to another question just like this: Thank you to all vets, past and present, American and Allied. Your bravery has not been forgotten.
  • Thanks very much :)
  • Cannot seem to add a comment to "notmrjohn above, so here goes. I apologize if I did not make the connection more clearly, Sir, but you may not have really "listened" either in your attempt to provide your brand of humor to the post. The world of Nature and the Human Spirit are in synch. with each season of the year: now darkness, dead grass and apparently dead fields and trees, animals hibernating, recalling our loved ones and Veterans and others who died in service. . We are invited to mark the rhythm, and we celebrate 'holy-days" which have become "holidays'" to match Nature's passages. This weekend we had many ads in all the media 'jingling" bells and asking us to buy for Christmas, six-seven weeks before the "holiday/holy-day" and of course obscure the actual meaning of THIS DAY for too many with pressumre to shop. Not long ago, Thanksgiving was the start of the Winter "holidays" for shopping. Veteran's Day is always noted on the actal day, because Vets did not want it to become another Monday tacked on for a thre-day weekend, but since it fell on Sunday, the actual day 11-11, we have the "long weeeknd" anyway. It is a disaster psychologically, emotionally and spiritually to interfere with the rhythm of the season and of our bodies. We do it all the time, unlesss we resist: so instead of silence, waiting and savoring the patient passing of time, we jump ahead to Halloween, now reverted to its 'goofy," yes, pagan stupidity, not a Christian event except for the few, and on to Christmas-Hannukah-Winter Solstice and every other turn of the cycle of Sun, Moon and Earth and RUIN them by anticipation. Ester egg hunts two weeks before Easter! Hence, most kids who are spolied anyway by having too much "stuff" and are way too advanced for their years with the culture and media and also winning the peer pressure war with parents, are naturally having sex and babies at 10 and 11 for this and other reasons. Think before you comment on my posts or any others John please.
  • Rememberance Day (Canada) and Veteran's Day (U.S.) occur on Nov 11th. They always provide me with a conflict (I'm a citizen of both countries). One is to remember the fallen and the other to celebrate those who have served. I'm a Marine Veteran and cannot help but remember my fallen comrades who served with me in Vietnam. It brings back sad memories and I find that I have nothing to celebrate. God bless all servicemen everywhere. They do their duty to their country and serve with pride.
