What differences are there from traditional Hinduism and contemporary Hinduism (yes, I know there are may sub-sects)? What has changed over the centuries?

One thing I can list is a change form literal interpretations to symbolic. Literal belief in the physical existence of the gods as beings, vs considering them to be symbols of universal concepts. Hinduism has evolved in similar was to how Judaism has evolved- both religions are highly focused on family, tradition and culture far more then on more esoteric or supernatural aspects.
