  • For modern cars, you really need an associate of applied science degree in auto repair followed by ASE certification (more education) in the specialty area of your choice. You would also be well served becoming a factory-certified mechanic in a given make of car, such as Ford, Volvo, Audi, or Toyota. All-in-all, about 4 years of education and almost as much in clock hours doing hands-on work.
  • When I took auto repair classes at a local community college a few years ago. The instructor there said that in the future and as time goes on cars are becoming more & more electronic & less mechanical. He said basic mechanical repair doesnt take long to learn. But you need a degree in electronics either at the 2 year or better at the 4 year level to be able to troubleshoot electronic problems in a lot of the cars nowadays down to the component level. Instead of just replacing expensive multiple component systems. Hope that helps. Dont get me wrong though. I was offered a job in the mechanics shop of the city I worked for when they found out I only had a few courses in auto mechanics at the 2 year community college level. I'm glad I eventually got a desk job though especially as I get older. Its nice to work in an office and help people with questions.
