Well if you've seen the pattern they fly in they usually fly in kind of an inverse triangle shape and there's usually one bird at the front. I think that that bird has flown the rout many times before so now he's like the head bird and he guides all the other birds in what to do. So then the other birds gets trained while flying with the head bird and when the head bird passes on he chooses another bird to be a head bird. Or if he dies I guess all the other birds just elect a bird amongst themselves or maybe just the biggest bird becomes the new head bird.
There is a theory that the magnetic field that surrounds our planet is how. Whales are said to utilize this field for navigation also.
very good question. Scientist Rupert Sheldrake believes there is a grid that all animals are connected to. (We are too but forgot how to use it) Very interesting book he wrote is "Dogs that Know When Their Owners Are Coming HOme".

You're reading How do birds find their way while migrating?

sounds good. Do you ever wonder how birds or fish all know when to turn at the same time and which way, so they don't all run into each other?

Yes I do, but I think they just have really fast reflexes due to the fact that birds have amazing vision and fish have really easy to move bodies based on their skeleton system and what they're made of and stuff. Oh and the bird thing I said is only my guess based on observation, but the truth is that no one really knows. We've put in a ton of effort into figuring out bird migration and still don't know, and honestly I believe my theory is the most plausible. There's no way they fly that way just for fun. Oh I just remembered something I read about it being for wind risiliance... but still. Flying that way could be killing two birds with one stone if you will.

If you like to read I recommend the book in my answer. It's very interesting and the theory is scientifically tested.

Thanks, maybe I'll peel my eyes for it! I get very board with books though, I haven't read in years except what was assigned at school. Maybe I'll be able to start soon though now that I've got medication for my attention and hyperactivity problem I've lived with my whole life.
