I have taken in the past effexor xr ..and it did cause some weight gain (minor)...but your depression is your immediate problem..it can be a serious illness. If you gain weight--and there is no guarantee that you will--you can simply decide then if you want to continue with it.

They all very from person to person and they can cause both gain and loss, but I hear gain is more common. It's one of the SSRI's that claims to be "weight neutral" but most people who have used it will disagree.

i took prozac for about two months and ended up losing 15 pounds because i wasnt eating anything. for some reason it just made me lose the urge to eat anything

Prozac is not one of the medications that makes you gain weight. There are some that do, but this is not one that does. I took it for awhile, but i had to switch over to something else because it began to make me angry.

i have taken prozac for about 1 year now and i am experiencing weight gain. however, last year i actually lost about 15 pounds while on prozac. i was exercising everyday and was watching my diet. recently i have gained all of that weight back while still on prozac and still have been exercising and can not loose even 1lb! i have actually been gaining even while still exercising. so i am very confused and i am not sure what to do or think.

My sons father took it and he gained weight. Almost every anti-depressant he took made him gain weight.

Prozac usually has the effect of slight weight loss or nothing. The real down side for many people is they can't orgasm.

I have taken it, I did not gain weight. You will have to speak to your doctor about the specific side effects of prozac because I can't remember. I think, if that is a possible side effect, it could be because it helps restabilise you, and many with depression find themselves unable to eat - thus the weight gain on prozac once it begins to have effect.

I have taken it and it ususally has the opposite effect and makes you less hungry, but you need to see a doctor, not us for this kind of diagnosis.

Weight gain is a known side effect of Prozac. In clinical studies, weight gain occurred in more than 1 percent of patients taking Prozac. If you are taking this drug and notice that you are gaining weight, talk to your doctor so he or she can perform a physical exam to look for possible causes of weight gain. If your weight gain remains unexplained, your doctor may recommend weight loss suggestions or prescribe another antidepressant. There are a number of possible side effects with Prozac® (fluoxetine hydrochloride). Weight gain does appear to be one of them. This data comes from clinical trials where Prozac was studied extensively and side effects were documented. Side Effects and Clinical Trials Before medicines are approved, they must go through several clinical studies where thousands of people are given a particular medicine and compared to a group of people not given the medicine. In these studies, side effects are always carefully documented. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine. Side effects are then usually separated into those that occur in more than 1 percent of people (frequent side effects) and those that occur in less than 1 percent of people (rare side effects). In these studies, weight gain was reported as a frequent side effect of Prozac, occurring in more than 1 percent of people (although the exact percentage was not reported). Suggestions If you are noticing weight gain with Prozac, talk to your healthcare provider. He or she will conduct a physical exam to look for other causes of weight gain, such as certain types of medical conditions. If the weight gain remains unexplained, your healthcare provider may give you some suggestions, such as eating heart-healthy foods, exercising more, and limiting your intake of alcohol. If the weight gain continues, he or she may also recommend other lifestyle changes or a possible switch to another antidepressant medication.

I took prozac for a few months, and it didnt really do anything to me at all, mentally, or to my weight. Hopefully you will be ok :)

All antidepressants lead to weight gain with the exception of one called stratera which is diagnosis specific. Wellbutrin has the opposite effect if you already have tendencies toward an eating disorder. They don't prescribe it if you do, makes it worse. That is why I have never taken one long enough for it to make a difference. What's worse than walking around fat and unatractive with a held back tear that never falls hanging in the back of your mind because you just cant pin point it to cry it? They remove the symptom, and leave the cause. Eventually, all psychiatric medications top out. Meaning you eventually reach the max dose or it stops working. Then you have to start all over again on something else. I believe the only real purpose they serve is as a distraction. Some people can make that work... I used to dispense them, therefore I know a little too much about them to allow myself to fall into a trap. I suggest cognative reconstructive therapy. it truly is the only thing that works
