  • Did you mean what is fiqh? It is an Arabic word used to refer to detailed rules governing obligations and other actions carried out by Muslims. The two primary sources for fiqh rulings are the HQ (Holy Qu’an) and the Hadeeth (thousands of anecdotal reports about Prophet Mohammed). For example, the HQ lays down the obligation to pray, but doesn’t say how. The fuqaha (scholars of fiqh) looking through the collections of Hadeeth find one in which the Prophet is reported to have said ‘pray as you see me pray’. From similar research through the primary and secondary sources they would deduce things like the preconditions that make prayers an obligation (for example one has to be mature, in a sane state of mind etc). Fiqh will answer questions like can one pray at any time, anywhere and in any state. Water is needed to wash before prayers, fiqh will ask and answer questions like what is acceptable as water for the purposes of this ritual purification. Fiqh has made sure that the procedures followed now are the same as those followed many centuries ago, that they are the same in Timbuktu, Africa as they are in Sinkiang, China. Hope this’ll do for starters.
