I have one in my back garden and it carries a cable to a derelict house that is only used for milking goats - with a generator-driven milking machine. However, we are two years into a ten year plan to put all power lines underground.

Power to my house comes from a line of poles on the other side of the road. Telephone comes out of the ground and up a pole just outside my gate, then from that pole to nearby houses including mine

It's not a stupid question. I know people who live off the grid because it's too expensive to get power to them. I have power and phone line to both houses, but one of them off the grid as far as the net is concerned

In my neighborhood all the lines are underground, so we don't have visible poles and lines. There are other (older) areas in town where there are still poles and lines.
