I have no legal advice on the matter, but if your vehicle is registered with the DMV, I assume the registration is still in your name until the car is paid in full and you can call the police and claim it as stolen property. In the event that the car is registered in your ex-friend's name, then take the license plate number and go seek a lawyer specializing in contracts and small/medium claims. The DMV should be able to track down last known addresses and the postal service should have a change of address recorded. If your ex-friend did not file these things, then it is very likely other parties are looking to collect debts at well and your professional should be able to help you "follow the money".
