It varies from state to state, and from city to city.

I think it varies depending on where you live. I live in a big city. I am just walking distance (down and around the corner from my house) from a large group of recycling dumpsters. newspaper, co-mingled papers, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum....

Recycling is limited here in the islands. They have to balance the cost of shipping the goods to manufacturing centers on the mainland with the value of the articles.

Depends on the city's recycling plant - my small town doesn't do magazines or cardboard. Just plain newspapers and white paper.

In my city, your are required to sort recylables or they will not pick up your trash. And there is actually a fine if you don't sort and recycle a certain percentage. We have a bin for glass, a bin for plastic, paper and metals, a bin for yard waste and compost material and a bin for trash. It takes about 15 extra minutes out of my week, but I think it's worth it. The compost material is used locally for parks, plastics are used locally (and sold nationally) to make things like park benches and recycle bins, glass and metal I'm not sure about.
