Why do people feel compelled to defend themselves against things they know to be false? I mean if someone calls you a blue monkey, you know you are not a blue monkey...right?

I think there are two reasons why this happens: A.) It's simply insulting and goes against their values SO MUCH that they take great offense to it. I.E., if someone called me a child molester, I'd be pretty upset, because I'm very well aware that I am not. B.) They get defensive because they actually ARE that way and are doing their best to disguise that characteristic of themselves.

Some how I feel that I am the great pumpkin or is that Yeahwell, I get confused. The dogmaticist will defend his beliefs sometimes to the death even if he knows that the large end of the egg must be down when eating a hard boiled egg. I had to make a Swift analogy there.

Without thinking, they automatically feel the need to defend themselves. It would make more sense if they simply just told the person "Can you not see that I am a pumpkin and not a blue monkey?"

Because humans are built to defend themselves automatically. It's a natural trait needed in order to survive.

I think it is because people feel hurt and offended and want to get back at the person that said it...If somone says i am a liar i dont want that kind of gossip getting out about me so hell yeah im gonna defend myself.

The real question is: Why would you be HURT by a comment someone made if you didn't have a doubt about it yourself? If I called Kate Moss a fatso, she couldn't be harmed by it. She's not over weight. You'd think I was ignorant. It can work the same way for less obvious things like intelligence. If you called me an idiot, I'd think you were ignorant. I wouldn't feel hurt, because it's obvious to me that I'm not an idiot. Any one of any importance in my life knows that, and arguing with someone that has called me that would be like trying to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.
