On April 6, 1994, Rwandan President Habyarimana and the Burundian President were killed when Habyarimana's plane was shot down near Kigali Airport. Hutu extremists, suspecting that the Rwandan president was finally about to implement the Arusha Peace Accords, are believed to have been behind the attack. The killings began that night. I heard several stories. The most famous is that the Tutsi ethnic group was giving privilege by the west to rule over the nation for the benefit of the Tutsi group and Europe leaving the Hutus impoverished without possibility of political or government gain.
