  • Just a minor one ... TKD is a sporting game based on war and as such competition is highly encouraged. You can still learn it without entering tournaments, but frequent sparring with someone is pretty much required. I wonder why you would choose to learn a sporting game type of martial art but not want to play the game ... perhaps you would be happier learning a different martial art, one without a competition aspect to it.
  • I was in taekwon-do and weither or not you wanted to compete in actual tournaments was up to you. But you did have to spar in class, and to grade to a higher belt.
  • There are two broad disciplines nowadays in TKD - Olympic style and traditional. Olympic style is VERY competitive-oriented so avoid an Academy that is affiliated with it for starters. Sparring is a central part of any real Academy though, no matter what - but there are 'no contact' options in some.
  • I've taken TKD for years, and have never participated in a tournament. There's sparring most classes, however, which you can get used to and enjoy even if you start off not liking it or being intimidated by it.
