First of all lose the backpack and the Barney lunch pail. Next take a serious look at your wardrobe and hair style and try to go for a less scholastic look and finally try to adapt a non-scholarly posture and mannerisms.

To be honest it probably has relatively little to do with how you dress. It's just that generally people who are between the ages of about seventeen and twenty five often *are* students - the assumption probably has more to do with your age (or the age you look) rather than what you're wearing. I've never been the combat trousers and t-shirt type (I'm actually very well groomed the majority of the time, even when I was at uni I used to use a big handbag rather than a rucksack) and people still ask if I'm a student - I take it as a compliment because it probably means I look young. The only thing that might help is if you wear more expensive clothes (how many students can afford Gucci?) - but frankly I'm not sure it's worth it.
