  • I don't do it, but understand that others do because it makes your stomach flatter. From my understanding it's another form of bullemia.
  • Because society pressures you to lose weight, and it's very possible to become addicted to weight loss (been there done that) to the point of taking extreme measures and feeling crushing defeat if your super-precise scale tells you you've gained an ounce or two. Laxatives aren't all that effective though... thy just move the undigestible bits through you a little faster. You still digest lots of it. There's the instant gratification of dumping (hahaha... dumping) a bit of water weight and the bulky stuff sitting around in your gut, but that lasts... like... 'till the next time you eat.
  • Pills or liquid, herbal or otherwise, laxative abuse is a common form of "weight control" in people suffering with Eating Disorders. The use of laxatives as a way to lose or control weight is not only dangerous, but irrational. The actual purpose of taking a laxative is to stimulate the large bowel to empty, which occurs only after the food and it's calories for energy have been absorbed through the small intestines. Essentially, a person taking laxatives to control weight is only going to cause their body to lose fluid, which can potentionally be followed by periods of water retention and an appearance of bloating (causing the sufferer to want to lose more weight and ingest more laxatives). The reason people suffering from eating disorders seem to lose weight while taking laxatives is because in most cases they are increasingly watching calorie intake and restricting food consumption, inducing vomiting, and/or compulsively exercising. Continued laxative use can cause bloating, cramping, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances and imbalances, cardiac arrhythmias, irregular heart beat and heart attack, renal problems, and death. Phenolphthalein, a popular ingredient previously found in many brands of laxatives has now been recalled by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, United States) due to studies indicating that it has been linked to cancer. Withdrawal symptoms can be expected in stopping the use of laxatives after a continued period of using them as a "weight loss" method. These include, abdominal cramping, mild to severe constipation, bloating, mood swings and general feelings of fatigue and "feeling sick." In less severe cases the symptoms will usually subside in about 2 weeks, but in cases where a person have ingested handfuls or more laxatives on a regular basis, it may take longer and require medical assistance. http://www.healthyplace.com/Communities/Eating_Disorders/peacelovehope/laxatives.html http://health.uri.edu/healthed/laxative.php http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/2005/04/13/teenage_girls_laxatives_and_vomiting_lead_to_weight_problems.php http://www.annecollins.com/lose_weight/weight-loss-laxatives.htm
  • Have you heard about the new weight loss drug Ali (or something like that)? It gives you the runny drizzling poops that leak out so that you have to wear a pad all the time to catch it. fun.
  • Laxative abuse is dangerous and pointless. It stimulates the bowel to empty, that's it. Nothing gets into your bowel until it's been through the digestive tract, so instead of expelling additional calories, you are only losing fluids, which can result in electrolyte imbalance- dangerous. People use ex-lax to lose weight because it does temporarily make the stomach look flatter, and it DOES bring down the numbers on the scale. People just don't realize that the lost weight is mostly water, not fat. It is very common among individuals with eating disorders. Actually, many of them DO realize that it doesn't cause fat loss, but extreme dehydration CAN make a person look thinner, and some use laxatives for that purpose.
  • I think people that use laxatives to induce loose bowel movements are crazy. They should not be used unless the person is very constipated. In all my crazy thoughts, I would never go this route.
  • You can hurt yourself doing this. You disrupt your water and ion balance by inducing diarrhea. In due time, this will have dire results on the person besides losing some weight. I think the only thing you may lose with this method is just lose water weight.
  • I think it's really hard to understand why someone would do something like that unless you actually suffer from an eating disorder. I can say from experience that discomfort and pain become trivial, if you're really really determined to lose the weight and suffer from an eating disorder you will literally just do and try anything. So don't judge people on that sort of thing, it's dehumanising enough that modern society pressures reduce people to acting this way.
