  • I'm not sure you could have a PC without some sort of internal storage device, even if it's just a large enough space to hold an installation of whatever operating system you're using and all your other info is saved on memory cards or external devices. If there's no hard drive, where is the operating system and boot-up information going to be stored? I guess it's possible to load an operating system from a memory card, granted that it's large enough. Anywho, the reason many new PC's don't have floppy drives is because floppy drives are outdated. CDROM and DVDROM have replaced the need for floppies, because they can hold much more data than a floppy diskette ever could. Hard drives aren't something we can easily do without, even though we do have many types of removable storage devices that come in handy for backing up data or moving data around - we still need hard drives in our computers to make them work.
  • Some types of computers are already loading custom operating systems right from memory devices. This won't become mainstream until the cost of memory falls further. I'd guess 4-8 years. The problem is that as our hard drives get bigger, we tend to collect more data on our computers too. So the question is will memory storage alternatives to hard drives be able to keep pace with our insatiable demand for storage space. I remember a time when 5GB was enough hard drive space for me. Now I'm looking forward to the 5GB memory stick just to carry stuff around...........
