From what I understand it is pretty rare. I've never even heard of anyone who's had it.

I found a website that doesn't exactly say how common it is, but it states every cause and who it is common among. I dont personally know anyone who has had it, but hopefully this ite can be of some help to you. http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_viral/toxic_shock.html

I've heard stories, but even the stories are few and far between. I've probably heard of more football players who broke their neck playing than that. I found one website that says there are about 35 cases reported each month in the US, and there were 2200 or so reported cases between 1983 and 1998. Does that help?

I have known one person to have toxic shock but I believe it is quite rare.

Never heard of anyone having it, but outta 70million people, 20 a year get it and 10 due to tampons, other than that its sooooooooooooooooo rare

I don't think it's very common but I do know someone who had it.

GREAT educational question! I don't know anyone who has suffered from this or died. However here is the Mayo Clinic site with good information: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/toxic-shock-syndrome/DS00221

Apparently, my elementary school principal (a man)had toxic shock syndrome. I really don't know how common it actually is, but don't know anyone else who has suffered from it.

Yes it is rare, but my 15 year old daughter, Alice, died of TSS in 1991. At that time it was reckoned that there were 2 or 3 deaths per year. In 1991 there were 6 deaths in the UK. Since our campaign, the instances of TSS are dwindling with 2 deaths in the last 5 years that I am aware of. However, tampons (containing rayon) i.e. major brands, can give you anything from a headache, nausea, high temperature and diarrhoea, but can progress to organ failure and death, so is it worth the risk? See www.tamponalert.org.uk for vital information and Safer Options to tampons page.
