    It will only absolve you of debt to creditors not to the government. Student loans cannot be removed through filing bankruptcy either. They, the IRS will do what it takes to get their money in the US. I am not sure about how it works in Australia.

    Bankruptcy, in the United States, can relieve you of your liabilities with the IRS only if you meet certain requirements. To start, the debt must be from earned income and has to be with filed tax returns 3 years or older.
