Drove home one night, I'm 17.I took a turn at around 40 (speed limit is 40) and never skid or anything.Cop was driving behind me.Gave me ticket said I took the turn too fast for my level of experience, even though my car takes turns excellent. Am I guilty

• I would agree with you...however, driving down a road at 40 MPH and making a turn at 40 MPH are two different things. Imagine making a sharp turn at 40 MPH...it doesn't matter what the speed limit is, you still need to slow down on turns, otherwise the cop does have a right to pull you over.

• Agreed. Going from this question it doesn't really state what the curve was like. I was assuming it wasn't too bad. I was also thinking in km/h, and 40 km/h isn't that fast. I can see a ticket for "reckless" driving, but not based on level of experience.

• The turn was not that sharp really..I did slow down to what I knew was safe. I actually saw headlights around the turn so I flipped off my high beams, slowed down to what I always take that turn at. I actually had to take the turn with the other persons high beams blaring straight into my face but I did it still without ever skidding, going off the road, or of coarse going into his lane. I think the cop thinks that becuase there was a car going around at the same time I should have slowed down more. Maybe I should have however I always take the turn at that speed with no problem and it's not like I actually went off the road or anything...and he was profiling my driving not on what he had just seen but my level of experience. This is a form of profiling in it's own. After i told him i always take the turn at that speed he then got smart and said "I'm not going to listen to a kid who has been driving for 2 months tell me that it was safe. I could see if you had been driving for 50 years and were a racecar driver but you are not."

• Well, I can't really say for sure if the officer is in the right or not since I don't know what kind of turn it is, how fast you slowed down, etc. But if you really feel you did nothing wrong then you can show up on the court date and dispute the ticket. Most people don't take the time to dispute traffic tickets, therefore it could work in your favor.

• I have not received the ticket yet since the cop said he was bust responding to a call...will my insurance go up a really high amount for a 25 dollar ticket? I don't even know if it's worth fighting. The suggested speed for this turn I believe was 25.

• If the speed for the turn was 25 and you were doing 40 then your speed was excessive. Pay the citation.

  No offense, paso, but your reflexes must be terrible.
  The '87 Toyota Corolla is an ill-handling beast, especially if one of the tie-rod ends is severely worn. There is a stretch of road here that is posted 45 that most non-locals can't take at 40 even in a decent car, though most locals can take it at 50 in an F-150. I could take it at... umm... let us call it 60 ;)
