Vehicular violations such as DUI, driving with a suspended license. These are by far the most common reasons people go to jail. Keep in mind that prison is quite different than jail.

I went for assault. I was defending someone, but it wasn't considered self-defense, so I got the charge.

I don't know, but I imagine that corruption and poor legal representation rate highly on the list.

I guess if you committed a crime that's worth jail time then you would have to do the time, providing you did not get legal representation.

Sometimes it's because they are easily lead, or I expect that it's because they didn't know the law as well as they should.

Guilty by association. I once went to jail for having stolen evidence at my house after my brother robbed a store.
