Why these double standards ? The book "The Age of Reason" by Thomas Paine was banned in UK because it attacked Christianity & the Church and the book by Salman Rushdie was not banned because it attacked Muslim's prophet and the author was Knighted !

1. These events happened 200 years apart. Societal standards change. 2. In the first instance, the 'attack' was on the dominant religion in the country, Christianity; in the second, the 'attack' was not so clear-cut, but was an interpretation of the work. Hegemony counts for a lot.

It's not so much a double standard as a matter of different cultures and several centuries.
