An autopsy ascertains the cause of a person's death by examining the body in considerable detail. All the major organ systems are examined and samples taken for further examination, as well as blood and body fluid samples for chemical and toxicological testing. Their past medicaal history is also taken into consideration and a final cause of death is determined. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autopsy

Well first to start the exam, we have to do a complete examination of the outside of the body. Written down are height, weight, markings, etc. After the external exam is done, the internal begins. You can use either a more common Y incision, or the less commonly used U incision. After the body is opened and the underlying tissues are separated, so we can see the rib cage which is then removed so the organs are able to be seen. First the chest & neck organs are examined, after that the abdominal organs are dissected and examined. First they will be examined just with your eyes. After that, you can dissect them further. Once you are done that, they can be set into slides & prepared for viewing under a microscope. When removing the brain, an incision, and saw are used. Test can also be sent out for drug levels etc. After the total study of a case is done, a report is made that describes what you have done, your findings, and a case summary.
