You should put whatever it says on them as long as it's not a maximum allowed PSI. I think you should call your mechanic.

For a FWD car, I generally put the maximum pressure on the sidewalls minus 2-3 PSI to allow for temperature changes and run the rear about 4 PSI lower than the front, though even that varies from 0 to 6 depending on the handling. The way I drive, running the recommended pressure leaves my front tires wearing excessively on the edges, a classic sign of underinflation, the rear sticks too well and causes severe understeer in the slippery stuff, the whole car feels like it's wobbling even with a perfect alignment due to sidewall flex, and my MPG rating takes a hit due to higher rolling resistance.

A good everyday use tire pressure is between 32 and 35 psi.
